Why Centering Matters for Card Grading
Centering is one of the four pillars of card grading and it is often the easiest flaw to spot. A card with poor centering can never receive a PSA 10, regardless of how perfect the corners, edges, and surface may be. Checking centering at home before submitting cards for professional grading saves time and money.
PSA requires centering of 60/40 or better on the front and 75/25 or better on the back for a Gem Mint 10 grade. Understanding these ratios and how to measure them gives you a significant advantage.
Understanding Centering Ratios
Centering is expressed as a ratio comparing opposite borders. For example, a card with 60/40 left-to-right centering means the left border is 60 percent of the total horizontal border space and the right border is 40 percent. Perfect centering would be 50/50.
Both left-to-right and top-to-bottom centering are measured independently. The worse of the two measurements typically determines the centering sub-grade.
Key thresholds to know:
- 50/50 to 55/45 — Excellent centering, consistent with PSA 10
- 55/45 to 60/40 — Good centering, still eligible for PSA 10
- 60/40 to 65/35 — Acceptable, likely PSA 9 territory
- 65/35 to 70/30 — Below average, typically PSA 8 or lower
- Worse than 70/30 — Poor centering that significantly impacts the grade

- Measure the right border width at the same position
- Repeat for top and bottom borders
